Yes it is possible, but preferably not done. The reason being that H1 visa is so difficult to get in the first place and unless and until you really have to downgrade (I'm calling it a downgrade because of the difficulties involved in staying here longer with the J1 visa) you shouldn't be doing it.
Fellowship opportunities on a trend these are difficult but not impossible. If you work hard you should be able to get a Fellowship with an H1 visa in the field of your choice.
